Chapter 1: Meeting People Isn't As Fun With Illusion
Chapter 1: Meeting People Isn't As Fun With Illusion
Angry shouts sounded as two teenage brothers, one with black hair, blue eyes and the other with grey-red hair and blank purple eyes, rushed from the bakery.
"Can you keep up, brother?" the black-haired one called.
"Yeah," came the grunted reply.
"Then give me the bread, and use that dark magic of yours! I'll be nearby in alley," the older one snapped. The two abruptly stopped, and the younger, blank-eyed one shoved the bread at the older one and turned to face the guards rushing after them. The black-haired brother ran off, not keeping with his promise and disappearing out of town. The three guards after them stopped, unsure of what to do with just one. It had snowed recently, and the younger smirked. Dropping to the ground, he quickly traced a strange symbol into the snow, right down to the ground.
"What's he... doing?" one asked another, clearly frightened of what this child was doing. The other shrugged, looking just as unsure. Then, the purple-eyed teenager stood up and began to mumble something incoherent. The air crackled with dark magic; too late, the guards realized what he was doing and tried to flee.
"Kiro-ana-xiao!" he shrieked, and the guards stopped in their tracks, frozen by fear. Only after the child had disappeared did they realize he had not actually chanted a real spell. So, what was that magic in the air?
Ryuuka swung into an alley, drawn in by the alley cats' meowing. He had realized that Illusion had fled the town shortly after he had chanted the fake spell; he hadn't wanted to actually hurt those guards if Illusion wasn't around. The cats crowded around him, drawing him deeper into the alley as guards clanked past. One cat jumped up onto his shoulder, and the 15-year-old flinched when she sharply cuffed him with sheathed claws.
He knew this cat well. Her name was Rina, and she was always looking for reasons to try to persuade Ryuu to abandon Illusion and fend for himself. However, he just couldn't do it. Despite Illusion's irresponsibility, despite his reckless behavior, despite all the times he had hurt Ryuu, Ryuu loved his brother and couldn't bear to do anything that might hurt him. He still remembered the time that Illusion had shoved Ryuu for being scared, and Ryuu had run off. Illusion had come looking for Ryuuka with tears on his face and a hoarse voice from crying and calling for his missing brother. There was no way he would put his brother through that again.
"See? He left you! I keep telling you to just leave him!" came the cat's sharp hiss.
"I can't defend myself; you know that very well, Rina. I was never given any training. I'm a healer, and there's no possible way I could protect myself without Illusion. Besides, he's my brother. I told you about the time I ran away form him; he was so upset! I can't do that to him, not again," came the soft reply. Ryuuka wasn't as outspoken or as daring as Illusion was; however, he could be pretty nasty if he needed to. There was a time when Illusion had been shot in the chest and nearly died. He'd completely lost it, and had nearly killed the guy who had shot his brother.
"You know you could always come to me and the alley cat family; we would take care of you." Now Rina's voice was soft and gentle, full of pity; he hated it when her voice was like that. She knew of his blindness, she knew he didn't like being pitied, but still she used that tone with him!
"Stop pitying me. I don't need it. I know I'm blind; pitying me won't solve it." His voice was still soft as honey, but with a raw edge to it, full of bitterness. Then, another presence. The cat hissed, and leaped over to where the other cats were. The cats disappeared, and Ryuuka turned, ready to run himself if the presence turned out to be a bad presence. No, just another person. However, guards were clanking nearby. Rolling his eyes best he could, he grabbed the shirt of the other and dragged him further into the alley. The gaurds marched past, not even giving the alley a glance.
"Learn to listen," he hissed, and then, fast as a snake, darted out of the alley and into the forest. Purple eyes flashing in annoyance, he trudged through the snow to the old, abandoned, haunted house where he and his brother lived. He opened the door, and entered. Shutting the door, he found Illusion in the kitchen.
"Oh, you're back." There was nonchalance in Illusion's voice; for some reason, that set him off.
"You left me!"
"You remember the plan, don't you?" Illusion's uncaring tone just served to anger the blind teenager further.
"Leaving me alone in the town wasn't part of the plan!"
"But it worked."
"That's not the point! Remember the last time I went missing? You nearly killed yourself looking for me! Do you want to actually die looking for me because I got caught? Huh? Do you?" he hissed, and then stalked to the room in which three spirits lived. Coincidentally, Ryuuka also lived in that room. He began to throw books around the room, and finally found the one he was looking for.
"Find it?" came a disembodied voice.
"Yes, Feather, I found it. You won't mind reading aloud again, will you?"
"Of course not," Feather scoffed. "It's not like that failure you call a brother will. How else are you supposed to learn anything if he won't read to you?"
Ryuuka liked Feather a lot. Feather was short-tempered but kind, and never minded reading to Ryuuka. Feather ended up taking care of Ryuu a lot more than Illusion did, but since he was bound to the house because he died there, Feather couldn't go out of the house very far. He could only go as far as the old fox den in the woods, which was only about 5 feet away from the small, overgrown house.
"Thanks, Feather."
"For what?" Feather sounded confused.
"For being a better brother to me than Illusion is."
"No problem, Violet." Feather used the age-old nickname he'd been given by the spirits. He no longer minded being called a color, and had long since lost his irritation of it.
"Hey, Feather?"
"Yeah?"
"Could you read me the story about Sleeping Beauty?"
"Sure thing, Violet."
"Can you keep up, brother?" the black-haired one called.
"Yeah," came the grunted reply.
